24/11/2008: Web sites and the new VAT rules

Alistair Darling has introduced a new VAT rate effective from December 1st which will affect all e-commerce web sites.

VAT is to be cut from 17.5% to 15% from 1 December 2008 until 31 December 2009. The chancellor urges retailers to pass it on as soon as they can. Alcohol and tobacco prices will not fall as duty on them will be increased to match the VAT cut.

Webselect Internet contacted all our clients within 2 hours of the decision to inform them of the change and to discuss what effect it would have on their web site. We have already agreed and implemented changes to the majority of sites ready for the Monday morning deadline.

We are now looking for a volunteer to be the one who stays sober on New Years Eve 2009 to change the rate back to 17.5% on all our client sites!
